Holding the Guitar Correctly

(6 points possible)

  • Sitting straight (but relaxed) on front part of an armless chair
  • Shoulders level and relaxed
  • Curve (waist) of guitar is flat on left leg (which is elevated by a foot stool)
  • Bottom of guitar is centered with inner right thigh
  • Nut is at approximately shoulder height
  • Upper bout is resting gently against chest (sternum)

(6 points)

The performance goal is met based on all criteria.

(5–4 points)

One or two criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

(3–0 points)

Three or more criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

  • Right-hand knuckles are approximately equidistant from the soundboard (not leaning too much to either side)

(5 points)

The performance goal is met based on all criteria.

(4 points)

One of the criteria is not adequately demonstrated and needs correction.

(3–0 points)

Two or more criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

Correct Execution of Downstrokes with the Guitar Pick

(5 points possible)

  • The guitar pick is held securely between the right-hand thumb and index finger
  • The motion of the downstroke starts at the right elbow
  • The right-hand fingers maintain a relaxed curve shape throughout each downstroke
  • Neither the right wrist nor little finger is resting on the guitar during the exercise
  • The quality of sound is consistent with each stroke

(5 points)

The performance goal is met based on all criteria.

(4 points)

One of the criteria is not adequately demonstrated and needs correction.

(3–0 points)

Two or more criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

Correct Positioning of the Left Hand

(6 points possible)

  • Left elbow hangs down naturally

  • Using the tip(s) of the left-hand finger(s) to press the string down against the frets

(6 points)

The performance goal is met based on all criteria.

One or two criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

(3–0 points)

Three or more criteria are not adequately demonstrated and need correction.

Demonstrate that the
Guitar Is Tuned Correctly

(6 points possible)

  • Before the performance of "Spider Crawl Jam," the student will play the six open strings one at a time, beginning with the sixth string (to demonstrate that the guitar is tuned correctly)

(6 points)

The guitar was tuned properly.

The performance goal is met based on the criteria.

(5–4 points)

Most strings were in tune.

An attempt to meet the criteria is apparent; an understanding of the skill was demonstrated; however, the goal was not reached and correction is needed.

(3–0 points)

The guitar was not tuned properly.

The criteria was not met. An understanding of the skill was not demonstrated, and correction is needed.

Accurate Performance of "Spider Crawl Jam"

(12 points possible)

  • Correct notes are played using correct left-hand fingers (0–4)
  • The student keeps a steady beat throughout the performance (0–3)
  • Downstrokes are played correctly with the right hand using a guitar pick (0–3)
  • Notes are played with a clear tone (0–2)

(12 points)

The performance goal is met based on all criteria.

(11–8 points)

The performance demonstrates an understanding of the material and an effort to reach the skill level necessary to meet the criteria. Some correction or additional practice is needed to meet all criteria.

(7–0 points)

The performance does not demonstrate an understanding of the material or does not demonstrate an effort to meet the criteria. Significant correction or additional practice is needed to meet all criteria.
